Fake eyelashes have become a must-have in order to recreate the glamorous looks of celebrities seen in magazines and on the screen, and high street stores such as Debenhams, Boots and Superdrug have all seen thriving sales of synthetic lashes.
However, experts are warning women that improper removal and overuse of false eyelashes can lead to permanent destruction of their natural lashes.
According to hair restoration surgeon Dr Bessam Farjo, patients were left with gaps in their lashes due to overuse of the synthetic lashes. He said: “I have seen people who have used them extensively, or all the time, or for long periods of time, and they have lost lashes or a certain number of lashes to the point where they have to keep wearing the false lashes or they have come in and asked if they can be rectified surgically.”
He added: “It can be an issue if you are older because your eyelashes grow differently or are not as vital. It’s mainly a genetic thing some people have better eyelashes and some don’t.”
